Be proud of where you come from, but acclimate to your new culture.
It’s a common message many immigrants hear—and one Arifa Javed knows well. The University of Michigan-Dearborn sociology lecturer immigrated to the U.S. in 1995 and has studied the immigrant experience for two decades. Her film Essential Arrival provides an in-depth look at a new featured player on America's immigration stage, Indian immigrants. Interviewing experts from fields like law, sociology and public policy, in addition to many families of Indian immigrants in Michigan, this film paints a comprehensive, essential picture of Indian Americans. This event is part of the 2019 Washtenaw Read, and discusses topics in the semi-finalist selection Exit West by Mohsin Hamid. The Washtenaw Reads program is a community initiative to promote reading and civic dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing a common book. Participating libraries include Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter, Milan, Northfield Township, Saline, and Ypsilanti. For more information about Washtenaw Reads and previous years' reads, go to wread.org.
